aligning plate noun METAL: An aligning plate is a flat steel plate on which steel structures are straightened two-dimensionally in metalworking workshops. Two-dimensional workpieces and components made of steel, such as railings, steel frames or steel structures, warp during production due to thermal or mechanical processes such as welding, forging or rolling. In order to bring warped components back into the correct shape, they are placed on the aligning plate after completion and straightened with hammer blows, presses, by clamping or local heating. (rarely: also called straightening plate)
